Auckland Design Week has confirmed Whanganui, in partnership with Air Chathams, as its first ever regional partnership. More than 30 design professionals will fly into the city in March 2026 for an exclusive event that positions the city as a national design leader.

The collaboration marks a significant step for Whanganui as it leverages its UNESCO City of Design status to attract new networks, investment, and talent to the city.

‘Aotearoa's Design City' event will showcase Whanganui's diverse design identity through cultural site visits, industry tours, and conversations about heritage shaping future. Starting from Durie Hill, the day will include visits to design innovators GDM, the award-winning Playground Centre and Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery before concluding at the Whanganui iconic War Memorial Centre where a product expo will feature local designers.

UNESCO City of Design Manager Emma Bugden says “This is a significant opportunity to broaden the conversation of design, marking Whanganui’s role as a leader.

“Our status as the only City of Design speaks to our heritage, living design culture, and future ambitions. Auckland Design Week's People and Place theme offers the perfect platform to share our story and inspire ideas.”

Through connecting with Auckland Design Week's established networks, Whanganui gains access to industry leaders, potential investors and creative talent considering their next move.

Whanganui and Partners Team Lead, Tim Easton says, "Partnering with Auckland helps us capture more of the design sector's growth - attracting design businesses, creative professionals, and creating opportunities in tourism and education."

Auckland Design Week runs from 2-10 March 2026, with the Whanganui event demonstrating the city's growing reputation as a place where design matters both nationally and internationally.
