Design is about solving problems and creating pathways. In aviation, those pathways are the lifelines. Air Chathams began by providing reliable service to the isolated Chatham Islands, helping transform a remote community into a thriving economy. When the national carrier withdrew from regional ports like Whanganui in 2016, stepping in felt like a natural extension of that mission. We saw a community that deserved to stay connected.
When we first touched down nearly a decade ago, Whanganui was still officially classed as a town. Today, it’s a city and one of the fastest-growing ports on our entire network. Watching this region strengthen across diverse industries has been a privilege. We aren’t just flying planes – we’re supporting the momentum that helps Whanganui’s businesses, visitors, and families stay connected to Aotearoa and the world beyond.
Our relationship with Whanganui is best viewed through the lens of shared experiences and a real grassroots connection. It’s found in the roar of the engines during the annual Vintage Weekend, when we brought our iconic DC-3 to town before it was a part of our fleet. Seeing locals and visitors alike engage with a rare piece of New Zealand’s aviation history is so cool. It is also found in the pride of heritage, such as operating the special charter for the Classic All Blacks to honour local legend Andy Haden in his hometown. Whether we are meeting locals at the Whanganui Home Show or transporting freight, these moments embody our commitment to being a true partner in the city’s narrative.

CEO Duane Emeny Whanganui’s designation as New Zealand’s only UNESCO City of Design is a powerful catalyst for our shared future. To us, design is about the flow of ideas, talent, and creativity. Being the sole airline connecting Whanganui and Auckland puts us in a unique position to facilitate that flow. The City of Design status reinforces the value of the “creative corridor” we maintain; it gives a global context to the work being done here and invites the world to come and see it for themselves.
This is realised through initiatives that bridge the gap between New Zealand’s largest metropolitan centre and Whanganui’s design landscape. By operating exclusive charters for events like New Zealand Design Week, we act as a gateway that showcases Whanganui on a national stage. These aren’t just flights. They’re a commitment to connecting the city’s creative output with the rest of the country.
For Air Chathams, being part of this city is something we are deeply proud of. We believe that regional air service is more than logistics. It’s about the belief that every community can thrive. As Whanganui continues to grow as a centre for craft, design, and innovation, we’re committed to being the connection that carries those stories forward.
